New Placement

SHARON X. LIU: RECIPIENT OF
2025 ASYMMETRY CURATORIAL FELLOWSHIP
SculptureCenter, New York

Together with SculptureCenter, we are excited to announce Sharon X. Liu as the inaugural recipient of the Asymmetry Curatorial Fellowship at SculptureCenter, New York. Selected via a global open call, Sharon will begin her 20-month fellowship in August under the mentorship of the SculptureCenter team. This marks a pioneering collaboration between SculptureCenter and us, as well as our first international fellowship placement.

During her tenure, Sharon will join SculptureCenter’s curatorial team in developing their signature open call programme, ‘In Practice’, which invites artists who have yet to receive an institutional solo exhibition in New York City to propose solo projects. Since its inception in 2003, ‘In Practice’ has supported the production of new works by over 270 artists, including recent participants Covey Gong, Adriana Ramić, Claudia Pagès, and Marina Xenofontos, among others. Sharon will work on two full seasons of ‘In Practice’, as well as contribute to research and exhibition development, public programmes, editorial initiatives, and other curatorial activities across the organisation’s artistic programme introducing artists and thinkers whose work resonates with SculptureCenter’s mission and purpose.

Additionally, Sharon will receive mentorship, support and resources from us at Asymmetry to propose and develop public programmes to be realised in New York or at our multi-purpose programme space in London. Moreover, she will be immersed in our diverse network of curators, writers and scholars, contributing to, and interacting with, a rich hub of knowledge exchange and collaboration.

With SculptureCenter, this appointment continues our shared ongoing commitment to promoting essential global voices across thought and practice.

ABOUT THE ASYMMETRY CURATORIAL FELLOWSHIP

The Asymmetry Curatorial Fellowship at SculptureCenter has been established to provide an emerging curator with the opportunity to gain comprehensive experience in the planning, research, organisation, and installation of exhibitions at a leading US art institution. The position is geared towards a practitioner with demonstrated knowledge and experience of Chinese and Sinophone cultural ecosystems, contemporary artists, and curatorial practice, based in the regions or internationally.

This fellowship marks a pioneering collaboration between us and SculptureCenter. Together, we share a strong reputation for amplifying essential voices in the art ecosystem, across thought and practice. SculptureCenter is widely known for championing under-recognised and emerging artists, providing direct support to the artists for the production of new work. With Asymmetry's ever-growing global network, we are committed to nurturing the next generation of curators and equipping them to make valuable contributions to the arts ecosystem. Launching in the summer of 2025, this will be our first international fellowship placement, and first collaboration outside of the UK and Europe.

With SculptureCenter, we jointly acknowledge that provoking cross-cultural dialogue is essential to innovation, advancement and mutual understanding.
